Les Contes d'Hoffmann · Offenbach

November 12 - 22, 2011

In a Nuremburg tavern, the poet Hoffmann recounts his fantastical tales of lost love - Olympia, a lifeless doll he is tricked into seeing as a real woman; the frail Antonia, whose desire to sing causes her death, and Giulietta, a Venetian courtesan who steals his reflection.  In each story, a sadistic villain thwarts his romance.  The scintillating score features the famous "Barcarolle."  AVA's Music Director Christofer Macatsoris conducts the AVA Opera Orchestra.  David Gately is the stage director.

Oberto in concert · Verdi

January 26, 27 and 31, 2012
Verdi's first opera is a classic love triangle set in 13th century Italy, where family rivalries and blood feuds inspired Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Oberto, Count of San Boniface, has been defeated in battle by Ezzelino da Romana. Riccardo, the Count of Salinquerra and a da Romana ally, has seduced and abandoned Oberto's daughter Leonora, and is about to marry Cuniza, Ezzelino's sister. Oberto and Leonora attempt to disrupt the wedding, with tragic results. Christofer Macatsoris conducts the AVA Opera Orchestra. Performed in concert, Italian with English supertitles.

Pelléas et Mélisande · Debussy

February 25 - March 3, 2012
While hunting in the forest, Prince Golaud finds a frightened and lost girl who calls herself Mélisande. He brings her to his grandfather's castle, and marries her. Mélisande becomes attracted to his younger half-brother Pelléas, arousing Golaud's jealousy. Music Director Luke Housner accompanies on piano. Sung in French with English supertitles.

Jubilate! A Concert of Sacred Music

March 11, 17, & 18, 2012
An AVA favorite, this concert features three centuries of sacred vocal music, from Baroque to Gospel and beyond. The AVA soloists are joined by the 100 voice New Jersey MasterChorale. David Antony Lofton conducts the AVA Opera Orchestra.

L'elisir d'amore · Donizetti

April 28 - May 13, 2012
The peasant Nemorino is in love with Adina, daughter of a wealthy landowner. The charming plot follows Nemorino's efforts, with the help of a traveling quack doctor, to buy a magic elixir that will make Adina fall in love with him, instead of the boastful young soldier who is his rival for Adina's affections. Christofer Macatsoris conducts the AVA Opera Orchestra. Nic Muni, Stage Director. Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
